Energy-storage
Energy storage is viewed as the technology to enable cost-effective facilitation of grid modernization, with full potential for renewable energy generation and distribution. Early stage energy storage projects have been traditionally funded through cash or owner-operated sources in demonstration projects. Many recent examples show that energy storage projects are becoming bankable: lenders are supported in this by independent engineering firms with risk mitigation and assessment reports on specific projects. Compared to financing in wind and solar, energy storage has the potential for multiple use applications enabling variable revenue streams. This flexibility can be seen as an opportunity for creative project development, but at the same time it can be seen as a risk to realizing full revenue projections.

Storage-Summit
At our exclusive Storage Summit, DNV GL will guide you, with contributions from NORD/LB, BVES, and RES Germany, through the bankability of energy storage projects with insights in the latest developments on business opportunities, financial and technical risks, business cases and best practices. Join us  We offer you this platform where various stakeholders with interests in the energy storage industry will meet and share insights and best practices. We have invited a small and select group of people - for optimal interaction - coming from the finance industry, from utilities and of course project developers. There will be plenty of room for discussion and networking in a relaxed setting.

15:00    Welcome & Coffee
Opening of our chair Holger Ziegler Senior Consult at DNV GL

15:30    “Energy Storage Projects – Lenders Perspective & Concerns - Case Study”
Björn Heinemeyer, Senior Director, Deputy Head of Origination Energy, NORD/LB
There is a great potential for non-recourse financings and a substantial share of storage within the future energy mix . ECA‘s & development banks will play a key role for the bankability. Project finance was realized for first projects in USA, Australia, UK and Germany.  As a Case Study the Funding for Conergy’s Oz solar project in Australia - one of the largest solar-storage projects- will be presented.

15:45    "Energy Storage: technological overview and market trends”
Helena Teschner, Referentin Politik und Märkte, BVES – Bundesverband Energiespeicher e.V.
Energy storage can act like a „Swiss armyknife“, that unfolds its different tools depending on the specific application and particular requirements. Pumped hydro storage has been integrated successfully in the energy system for many decades and has proven its relevance for system stability. Battery storage systems can combine many business models. They are excellent for the provision of control energy in large scale applications, but also and especially in residential areas for the optimization of self-consumption. Mixed operation models are in the current center of attention, e.g. in swarms or quarter storage projects. The variety of technologies is also reflected in the capability to transform electrical energy to other energy sources, e.g. to gas by “Power-to-Gas” or to heat by “Power-to-Heat”. By linking the different sectors, the excess electricity can be stored for days, weeks and months. This offers a huge potential to augment the efficiency of the whole systems and as well to reduce carbon emissions, having in mind the goals of the Paris agreement.

16:00    "The three risks of storage – Technology, Market and Regulation“
Dr. Matthias Leuthold, Business Development Manager Storage and Sandra Reutter, Head of Finance & Investment RES Deutschland
Business models and risks of storage projects differ substantially from those of Renewable generation. Technology, market and regulation are in their early stages. Storage can be used for many things – but which things can only be done by storage? The presentation will briefly present recent developments of storage technology, and draft the technical, commercial and regulatory risks or storage projects. A case study of a storage project with non-recourse debt financing of RES in the US will be presented.

16:15    “Making Storage Bankable”
Martijn Huibers, Technical Professional Renewable Energy Technology, DNV GL
Recommended practice / guidelines for grid-connected energy storage systems - by DNV GL
Haike van de Vegte will explain which business models and risk-mitigation services are needed to facilitate bankability and market growth. How can technology evaluation assessments and project assessments contribute to your business case and optimize confidence in funding? What is the added value of the GRIDSTOR Recommended Practice for grid-connected energy storage?

16:30    Panel Discussion
