Providing independent, consistent module reliability data
Since 2014, the experts in our PV Energy Labs (PVEL) have produced the PV Module Reliability Scorecard based upon the results from DNV GL’s Product Qualification Program (PQP). The PQP and resulting Scorecard are voluntary programs that allow PV module manufacturers to demonstrate the reliability and durability of their modules to the global industry, and to provide PV equipment buyers and power plant investors with independent and consistent module reliability data. Through the PQP, DNV GL has tested over 300 bill of materials (BOMs) for more than 50 manufacturers, including nine of the top ten global module manufacturers and over 70% of the latest Bloomberg New Energy Finance ‘Tier 1’ manufacturers list.

Rapidly changing and evolving PV technology is catapulting our industry into exciting but unchartered territories. It’s important that developers and investors perform the necessary diligence to ensure their PV plants will last the expected lifetimes. Conducting diligence on the potential modules, inverters, storage and mounting systems, and selecting PV products that have performed well in DNV GL testing can have a significant and positive impact on performance, and ultimately the projects’ economics, over the plant’s lifetime.

Our PVEL team has released the fourth edition of the PV Module Reliability Scorecard, which is the most comprehensive publicly available comparison of PV module reliability test results. This year’s report found that the reliability and durability of modules submitted to DNV GL for testing generally improved in several of the test categories.
