However the tidal industry has much commercial promise and the UK is in an excellent position to be at the forefront of tidal energy development.

ITES 2017 worskhop - Finding the missing link: DNV GL's moorings approach in marine renewables

The workshop will address many topics, including the fully coupled analysis approach to design mooring systems, asset integrity strategies and risk-based approaches to certification. The topics presented in the workshop will draw upon DNV GL’s world leading marine services and the mooring integrity experience its gained from the deployment of mobile offshore units in the 1970’s, and the more recent developments in tidal and floating wind energy.

Steven Parkinson will present and illustrate the capabilities of a coupled analysis for floating structures which enables engineers to quantify the behaviour and loading response of floating platforms, and is essential for evaluating concepts and robust design procedures. This analysis will use DNV GL’s Tidal Bladed and Bladed, a fully-coupled model that accounts for a wide range of important phenomena, such as turbulence, waves, control design, rotor and structural dynamics and mooring systems.

Alex Argyros will present the latest approaches of asset integrity for mooring systems. Conventional mooring systems have consistently shown a high level of failures. Design and in-service strategies have reduced the impact of these failures in a cost-effective way. However, the use of novel materials and foundation solutions, as well as existing low-cost components unproven in a long-term permanent mooring application, introduces additional risks and uncertainties into the system, thus increasing the marine energy converter risk profile. An integrated design approach, as well as the contents of DNV GL’s new Recommended Practice, will be presented.

Claudio Bittencourt will present the risk-based approach used for the tidal sector that includes the experience harnessed in the field, as well as developments from floating wind technology.
