Ice impact on a propeller
Due to various reasons, the ice class vessel becomes more and more popular. At the same time the relevant ice class rules have significant updating to fix the open issues in these years especially on the propulsion machinery requirement. It brings challenges to the engineer in designing propulsion machinery regarding ice class requirement. Handling the ice impacting on the propeller is the biggest one among these challengers. A tailored software is needed to solve such challenges.
DNV GL has the leading position regarding to the ice class rule and requirements. We have been involved in the development of IACS ice class rule and hearing the updating of Finnish-Swedish Ice Class Rules (FSICR). Our Advisory section has handled more than 100 ice class projects over the past ten years. Nauticus Machinery is developing the transient vibration calculation solver to handle the ice impacting calculation in time domain. The development has very close cooperation with our Advisory Section and Approval Center. They have directly been involved in the development. The Advisory section provides their experience to make sure it is a cutting-edge tool supporting different system while the Approval Center provides the detail explanation of the latest ice class rule to make sure the functions are user-friendly to support the rule requirement. This tailored torsional vibrations tool together with the current ice class calculation functions will make Nauticus Machinery the complete software to handle ice class requirement regarding marine propulsion machinery.
