The superelement approach is the most widespread industry practice for modelling offshore wind turbines (OWT). This has become the common standard because it separates both responsibilities and intellectual property rights. Additionally, it allows simple file transfer without the need for detailed knowledge of the turbine and jacket.

We know that many engineers spend much time exchanging and converting models and results. The DNV GL software tools Sesam and Bladed form the complete, commercially available package that supports both a superelement and an integrated approach to designing and analysing OWTs. The interfaces between Sesam and Bladed have been verified and proven through a verification study.

Laurens Alblas is a Technical Support Engineer for Sesam at DNV GL – Software, a position he has held since 2012. He is product owner of Sesam’s fixed offshore wind software and specializes in support cases and user courses related to fixed offshore structures in general and offshore wind structures in particular. His background is in aerospace engineering and wind energy.
Will Collier_63x100
William Collier is a Chartered Engineer with the position of Senior Engineer at DNV GL, specialising in numerical modelling of wind turbines. He is primarily responsible for the structural dynamics modelling in the aero-elastic modelling code Bladed and has extensive experience of load simulation and validation studies for wind and tidal turbines.
