Impact study - New knowledge about emissions in Norwegian Waters

A key question when starting up the Green Coastal Shipping Program was: How significant are emissions from shipping in the Norwegian climate and environmental accounts, and what is the potential for emission reductions and industrial growth? In response to this, the Ministry of Climate and Environment initiated a study in collaboration with the Green Coastal Shipping Program.


Conclusion: The study determined that emissions from domestic ship traffic are substantial in the Norwegian climate and environmental accounts. There is great potential for emission reductions, business development, exports, as well as new green jobs. The maritime industry is prepared to take its share of emissions reductions, but an investment in restructuring is required from both authorities and industry. The study forms the factual basis for further debate and political decisions.

Barrier study - Zero and low emission solution for ferry connections

A significant number of ferry tenders will be announced under the direction of county municipalities over the next few years. It is important to use this window of opportunity to renew the ferry fleet with zero and low-emission technology. Despite strong political pressure, parliamentary rulings and goodwill from everyone involved, there are significant financial, legal and organizational barriers to achieving this.


Conclusion: The study has raised awareness of the concrete barriers that must be removed, and it has identified possible solutions. The transition towards a low-carbon ferry sector is now fully underway and is an example to follow for other domestic shipping segments. Recently, agreements have been signed for approximately 40 new electrically powered ferries, with additional investments of more than NOK 2 billion in battery and charging technology.
