An extensive number of Offshore Classification documents have been updated in October.
To provide an overview, these are divided into the following three focus areas:
- Enhanced Class
- Service delivery
- 3.General (technical) updates
Below is a short introduction to each of these focus areas and the associated updates in the standards. For more detailed information, please contact your local DNV GL office or see the updated standards, including an overview of the changes.
Enhanced Class
‘Enhanced class’ is the definition of the new restructured offshore standards, including ‘Interpretations’ and the voluntary notation Enhanced Systems.
The associated standards are:
- OS-A101 Safety Principles and Arrangements
- Completely re-written in line with the Enhanced Class approach and updated in accordance with regulatory updates and the latest technical insight and practical experience.
- OS-D101 Marine and Machinery Systems and Equipment
- Updated in line with the Enhanced Class approach.
- OS-D201 Electrical Installations
- Updated in line with the Enhanced Class approach and technical updates, earlier implemented in the comparable Rules for Classification of Ships, Pt. 4, Ch. 8.
- OS-D202 Automation, Safety and Telecommunication Systems
- Updated in line with the Enhanced Class approach and the latest technical insight and practical experience.
- OS-D301 Fire Safety
- Completely re-written in line with the Enhanced Class approach and updated in accordance with regulatory updates and the latest technical insight and practical experience.
Service delivery
The October updates include three service documents aiming to further improve DNV GL service delivery:
- OSS-101 Rules for the Classification of Offshore Drilling and Supporting Units
- There is a clear industry trend towards an increasing number of ageing offshore units operating beyond their designed operational life. The OSS in-operation survey descriptions have been updated to make sure we have professional and transparent follow-up in general, but with a special focus on these ageing units.
- OS-E302 Offshore Mooring Chain
- The improvements in this standard are based on knowledge gained w.r.t. the quality delivered by approved offshore chain manufacturers.
- OSS-201 Verification for Compliance with Norwegian Shelf Regulations
- DNV GL has a natural connection with the Norwegian Continental Shelf regulations and this update makes sure we are aligned with the latest updates and practices here. The Norwegian Petroleum Safety Authority has expressed its satisfaction about the updates.
General (technical) updates
Apart from the specific themes discussed above, a large number of standards have been updated:
- OS-A201 Cold Climate – Winterization
- Winterization rules specifically addressing offshore applications, based on an industry first tree tier approach consisting of functional, performance and prescriptive requirements.
OS-E101 Drilling Plant- Further improvements to DNV GL’s renowned drilling standard, including as an industry first coverage of Managed Pressurized Drilling and based on well barrier management principles.
- OS-E301 Position Mooring
- Updates on the POSMOOR standard based on user feedback and project experience. A new element is the definition of a new qualifier for thruster-assisted mooring systems, giving a choice between a redundant thruster system and a more robust mooring system.
- OS-E304 Offshore Mooring Steel Wire Ropes
- Minor updates based on project experience and user feedback improving the document’s user-friendliness.
- RP-A205 Offshore Classification Projects - Testing and Commissioning
- The update of this recommended practice extends DNV GL’s Quality Survey Approach to FPSOs.
