CLK Energy and DNV GL successfully conclude Turkey’s largest smart meter pilot project

Turkey experienced the world’s second largest increase in demand for energy over the last ten years and growth is expected to continue at around 7% until 2023

ISTANBUL, Turkey –  14 March 2017 - CLK Energy, Turkey’s leading electricity distribution and retail group, and DNV GL, the world’s largest resource of independent energy experts and certification body, have announced the successful conclusion of the biggest pilot rollout of smart meters in Turkey to date. The project explored the relative benefits and interoperability of different smart meter technologies and communication infrastructures. It has provided CLK Energy and the Turkish regulator with invaluable insight and experience into best practices for large-scale smart meter rollouts and implementing advanced metering infrastructures.

Turkey has experienced the world’s second largest increase in demand for energy over the last ten years and growth is expected to continue at around 7% until 2023. Meeting that growth with ensuring a reliable supply remains a major challenge for Turkey. As the owner of four distribution service operators (DSOs) – BEDAS, UEDAS, AEDAS and CEDAS – with a combined total of almost 10 million customers, CLK Energy considers to meet this challenge by replacing the majority of electricity meters with smart meters. The pilot included smart meters from seven different manufacturers, and assessed various implementations of powerline communications (PLC) and wireless communication. It explored the performance of the diverse technologies in different environments, including both urban and rural areas. Furthermore, the pilot included a high-level cost-benefit analysis to determine business cases for smart meter roll-outs. The results from the CLK-DNV GL pilot will be used as input for further projects in Turkey, including the ongoing Turkey Smart Grid 2020 initiative (TAS2020).

“Smart meters are a key part of our strategy for continuing to deliver a permanent and uninterrupted energy supply for our customers. But we needed to know which technologies were suitable for Turkey and what benefits they could bring before we can consider widespread deployment. By working with a partner that combined global smart meter expertise and an understanding of the Turkish energy landscape, we gained essential experience on the potential for smart meters in our country,” says Dr. Ilker Dursun, CLK Energy’s R&D Director.

“We are proud to have supported CLK Energy in this landmark project for Turkey. Before rolling out any new technology, DSOs need to consider all possible conditions and associated risks. Large-scale pilots such as this one are an essential part of that process. With the successful completion of this project, CLK Energy has helped Turkey take a major step towards a smarter energy future,” says Andreas Schröter, Executive Vice President Central Europe & Mediterranean at DNV GL.
