DNV GL joins Green Award scheme

DNV GL has signed a partnership agreement with the Green Award Foundation at Posidonia today to promote the highest standards of safety, quality and sustainability in shipping. DNV GL will become an incentive provider for the Green Award scheme and offer discounts for shipowners and managers who hold the Green Award certificate. The Green Award Foundation is an independent quality assurance organization that certifies shipping companies and vessels which exceed industry standards. It works with incentive providers from all over the maritime sector to offer certificate holders benefits such as discounts on port dues, products and services.

“The recognition of Green Award ships by DNV GL is a huge step towards further acceptance of corporate social responsibility principles in the industry,” says Green Award’s Chairman Captain Dimitrios Mattheou. “It demonstrates support to ship managers and owners prepared to invest efforts and means in better performance, and helps in making these investments economically sound. Green Award audits ships to assist in preventing incidents and improving safety. Green Award incentive providers reward efforts made by ships to meet the Green Award requirements – a great example of a joint action by the industry!”

“Enhancing the safety, quality and sustainability of ship operations is at the heart of what we do at DNV GL – therefore, working with the Green Award Foundation was a logical step for us. The scheme offers an excellent opportunity to reward companies which set best practice examples for shipping, and I hope it encourages many more companies to invest in future-proof technologies,” says Ioannis Chiotopoulos, Regional Manager South-East Europe & Middle East at DNV GL – Maritime.

DNV GL will offer Green Award companies a 10 per cent discount on training courses delivered by the DNV GL Academy worldwide. The certificate holders and their vessels also receive a 10 per cent discount on audits related to environmental standards such as ISO 14000 and ISO 50001.

With its network of ports, maritime organizations, service providers, ship managers, and owners, the Green Award scheme works to enhance the environmental and safety performance of ships and to promote the highest quality standards. Its requirements cover a wide range of subjects: from emissions reduction and sewage handling to the human factor, and from noise issues and equipment maintenance to management standards on shore.
