Peter van der Wielen, senior consultant power cables at DNV GL, received the Hidde Nijland prize 2014 during an award ceremony at the Technical University of Delft, the Netherlands, on 7 November 2014. Every four years the Dr. Ir. H.A. Hidde Nijland Foundation awards a prize to a person who (exceptionally) contributed to the science of electricity.
The foundation decided to nominate and award Peter for his exceptional expertise and his contribution to the knowledge development in the field of power cable technology. Peter is a known expert in monitoring partial discharges in medium-voltage power cables with our tool Smart Cable Guard which has also won DNV GL’s Innovation Award 2014.
In his speech after the official award ceremony, Peter explained why power cables are such an interesting and challenging field of expertise. He highlighted the complexity and high technical standards that come with the production of power cables, bringing together multiple technical disciplines like chemical, mechanical and electrical engineering.
