DNV GL strengthens its presence in Colombia with a portfolio of more than 548 MW

The energy estimation prediction methods of DNV GL seek to consolidate operations in Central and South America.

BOGOTA, Colombia - 14 December 2018  DNV GL, the world’s largest independent energy advisory and certification body, has used its energy estimation prediction methods, which is a reference worldwide, for a large number of projects in Colombia, reaching a portfolio of more than 548 MW.

The Colombian electricity system dependent on water resources, with a hydropower matrix above 60%, which today represents a risk when there are periods of drought characterized by climatic phenomena. These conditions expose a remarkable potential for the development and use of wind and solar resources in Colombia.

As part of the revolution in the energy sector, the Port of Cartagena seeks to improve the indicators of energy efficiency and environmental impact in port operations and is therefore evaluating the introduction of renewable generation within its facilities. DNV GL conducted an independent preliminary analysis of the wind regime and the energy production of the proposed wind project.

In addition, DNV GL has also worked closely with the Colombian energy company Celsia in the formulation of a project for a wind farm located in the Northeast region of the Colombian Atlantic coast.

Likewise, there is great interest from large corporations at an international level to enter the Colombian market, therefore, DNV GL has collaborated with one of the largest corporations at a regional level evaluating a portfolio of projects in La Guajira.

Furthermore, DNV GL has used its Mesoscale Virtual Met Data (VMD), a modeling service to generate a map of the La Guajira area with a resolution of 2 km, to improve the internal understanding of wind behavior in that area.

"The demand for electricity in Colombia has been growing since 2001 with rates ranging between 1.5% and 4.1% per year, we know that renewable energy represents a great opportunity for the country and we want to be part of its development, at DNV GL we move forward with firm steps in the execution of the company's strategy, which has a great emphasis on the certification and advice of renewable energy projects. These projects seek to consolidate operations in Colombia, Central America and South America. We want to reach a greater number of clients offering services and outstanding experience, which means reaching more non-conventional renewable energy projects, "said Santiago Blanco, Director and Area Manager Spain and Portugal, Energy.
