July 2015 DNV Rules for Ships

Following the merger of Class Societies DNV and GL, DNV GL will publish both GL and DNV set of rules to accomodate a smooth transition to a future common rule set.

The 2015 July edition of DNV rules for Ships is now available at www.DNVGL.com

New and amended rules were formally approved on June 18th  and are included in the 2015 July edition of the rules. 

Below is given a general overview of the changes.  For more detailed information, please view the links  and/ or contact your local DNV GL office for further information. 

Rules for Ships


Significant changes:

  • Piping Systems (Pt. 4 Ch. 6) - Included requirements for Ozone installations
  • Wave Induced Vibrations (Pt. 5 Ch. 2 Sec. 6) - New class notation
  • Oil Carriers (Pt. 5 Ch. 3)
  • CLEAN and CLEAN DESIGN (Pt. 6 Ch. 12) – updated
  • Gas Bunker Vessel  (Pt. 6 Ch. 37) – new class notation

Amendments:

  • Electrical systems (Pt. 4 Ch. 8) – aligned with IACS UR E15
  • Passenger and Dry Cargo Ships (Pt. 5 Ch. 2 Sec. 5) and Oil Carriers (Pt. 5 Ch. 3 Sec. 2)
  • Chemical Tankers (Pt. 5 Ch. 4)

A few comments:

  • A new section relating to Ozone installation (Pt. 4 Ch. 6) has been included as such instalaltion are now widely found onboard e.g. live fish carriers and in connection with ballast water treatment plants.

  • Amendments to electrical systems (Pt. 4 Ch.8) to align with the latest amendments in IACS UR E15 concerning electrical services requireed to be operable under fire conditions and the use of fire resistant cables.

  • A new class notation (Pt. 5 Ch. 2 Sec. 6) for reducing risk related to wave induced hull girder vibrations (whipping and springing) has been developed specifically for the container ships market. In addition the Class Note 30.12 is updated to support this class notation.

  • Related to Passenger and Dry Cargo Ships (Pt. 5 Ch. 2 Sec. 5) and Oil Carriers (Pt. 5 Ch. 3 Sec. 2) references to statutory access requirements (SOLAS Reg. II-1/3-6 and IACS UI SC191).

  • The rules for Oil Carriers (Pt. 5 Ch. 3) has undergone a major update to align with industry practise, market operational experience and amendments in statutory regulations. 

  • Rules for Chemical Tankers (Pt. 5 Ch. 4) is amended to to be in line with new statutory regulations (e.g. SOLAS Ch. I-1 Reg. 3-6, Ch. II-2 Reg. 4.5.1.3, USCG, IBC (Ch. 17) and OCIMF and IACS UIs).

  • Class notations CLEAN and CLEAN Design is updated to meet market demand.  The technical threshold for meeting notation CLEAN has been somewhat lowered, stil keeping CLEAN DESIGN as a high end product.

  • A new class notation for Gas Bunker Vessels (Pt. 6 Ch. 37) has been developed covering gas bunker vessels design and additional requirements to support the development of gas fuelled shipping and bunker operations in port.
