Over 8.500 participants who attended more than 800 courses worldwide took advantage of the training portfolio offered by DNV GL’s Maritime Academy in 2016. What can you look forward to in 2017?
Complying with new regulations might be one reason for attending a training course but the demand for training in 2016 clearly showed that the focus was much broader, on building competence in order to improve business performance and mobilise full potential. One of the main aims of Maritime Academy is to empower people to move forward by enhancing their skills and knowledge. A higher level of competence leads to safer, smarter and greener solutions which impacts the business performance overall. Having said that our top selling course in 2016 was once again Internal Auditor ISM-ISPS-MLC for Shipping Companies. Over the past three years a total of 2,205 customers have attended this course worldwide. As in previous years the topic of safety at sea was the overriding concern of our customers. High on the agenda were all courses related to Risk Assessment and Incident Investigation. A renewed interest in Port State Control was also noticeable and all courses leading to the effective implementation of a Safety Management Code (SMS), as identified by the ISM Code, were in high demand again, with the Designated Person Ashore (DPA) Training Course also included in the list of the three best-selling courses in 2016.
What's new in 2017
In addition to the classic topics offered as classroom training every year, Maritime Academy will put a heavier focus in 2017 on providing more variety in the methods of training delivery. Customers around the world have to respond quickly to the rapidly changing environment in the maritime industry and therefore, need more flexibility when it comes to learning. Maritime Academy intends to respond by making training more flexible.
Learning-focused webinars
One way we have found to do this is by offering short online training sessions via webinars. This new technology brings flexibility in several ways – quick to develop, quick to deliver and nobody needs to travel anywhere! We started to experiment with webinars in 2016 broadcasting a series of “Smart Ups” on innovative topics from April to November. More E-learning modules
Digitalisation is the buzz word of the moment and as business is evolving at anever increasing rate training via e-learning is in high demand. The topic currently under discussion the world over is Cyber Security. Cyber-attacks have increased exponentially over the past few years – also in the maritime industries. And they can have a major impact on critical maritime assets. Launched in September 2016 at SMM, Maritime Academy’s e-learning course Maritime Cyber Security Awareness was designed especially for crews (and shore staff) to raise their awareness about relatively simple things they can do to prevent typical cyber-attacks. The training helps with the first essential steps in building up cyber security defences and raises awareness about threats and counter-measures, addressing your cyber security management system simply by changing crew behaviour.
Survey Simulator courses
Real hands-on training without leaving the classroom is made possible thanks to our Survey Simulator courses. The SurveySimulator (SuSi) is an innovative software solution helping to train people to carry out visual inspections in a more comprehensive, efficient and safe way. Thousands of deficiencies placed on virtual vessels are available for training purposes and relate to both safety and technical issues. Developed initially to train DNV GL’s own staff, the deficiencies are based on our global inspection experience as a class society from hundreds of real-life inspections carried out every year. SurveySimulator features high reality 3D models of vessels that are available for realistic survey simulations. The portfolio of survey simulator courses comprises topics from hull inspection, engine room condition and machinery surveys to PSC top deficiencies and superintendent courses. Studying with DNV GL and WMU
The Postgraduate Diploma for Executive Maritime Management, developed jointly by the World Maritime University (WMU) in Malmö, Sweden and DNV GL’s Maritime Academy will start its third intake in autumn 2017. The Postgraduate Diploma provides a holistic executive education for maritime managers, providing them with the foundation for overcoming the challenges their businesses face and capitalizing on future opportunities. For more information please check the website: www.maritime-executive-diploma.com We are proud to announce that from September 2017 we will be offering a second Postgraduate Diploma in Maritime Safety and Security, also in co-operation with the WMU. With the new Postgraduate Diploma the two organizations focus again on safety as always, but this time also on security, given the changing global context. Within the maritime sector this covers the headline issues of piracy and terrorism but also includes trafficking, illegal fishing, port security and marine environmental protection, including the dumping of toxic waste. Furthermore there is the successful implementation of the ISPS provisions and how to respond to the continuous flows of irregular migrants and/or refugees using various means of transport and related infrastructure. Capacity for dealing with contemporary safety and security issues is essential not only for the numerous government officials responsible for performing tasks related to safety and security, but also for profitability and maintaining the good reputation of the maritime sector. The new programme consists of five modules that cover the following topics:
