MSC Zoe joins DNV GL fleet

DNV GL welcomed the Mediterranean Shipping Company’s new vessel MSC Zoe into class on Sunday when it was christened in Hamburg. MSC Zoe made her maiden voyage to Germany at the weekend and is the latest in a series of the company’s mega-container ships called the “Oscar class” – a new brand of 19,224 TEU container ships. MSC Zoe was named after Zoe, the grand-daughter of MSC Group founder and Executive Chairman, built at Daewoo’s Shipbuilding and Maritime Engineering (DSME) shipyard in South Korea and classed by DNV GL.

“The ‘Oscar class’ has turned MSC into a forerunner in the ULCS segment, and MSC Zoe is yet another example of this advanced technology. We are very pleased to welcome the ship to Hamburg and we look forward to continuing our close cooperation with MSC in the future,” says Matthias Ritters, Regional Manager Maritime Region Germany, DNV GL – Maritime. DNV GL is the leading classification society in in the container segment, with a big share of the largest vessels being constructed according to DNV GL rules.

MSC Zoe and her sister ships MSC Oscar and MSC Oliver are designed for sustainable and energy efficient operations. A low fuel consumption diesel engine reduces the vessels’ CO2 emissions and a double hull structure provides additional strength and resistance for heavy cargo loads.
