Weight coating or armoring to ensure lateral stability of pipelines, umbilicals and cables can be highly expensive; not only in terms of production but also in terms of storage, transportation, handling and installation.
Existing industry practice for on-bottom stability design in shallow waters is generally conservative. This often leads to increased cross-sectional weight or expensive seabed intervention.
This project aims to reduce overall conservatism by enabling dynamic on-bottom stability analyses in very shallow waters. We aim to use higher-order wave theories, and revisit acceptance criteria for lateral stability.
