Description

DNV GL is initiating a Joint Industry Project (JIP) to investigate the influence of non-conventional gases on the measurement uncertainty of flow meters. The more frequent occurrence of biogas and hydrogen in natural gas grids demands the verification of these meters under various gas compositions. The JIP will provide the meter manufacturer a technology qualification of their metering technology for non-conventional gases, whereas the end-users will obtain an overview of the current state-of-art of measurement technologies applied under these conditions.

Challenge

More frequent occurrence of high-CO2 biogas and hydrogen in natural gas grids demands the verification of gas flow meters under various gas compositions. Scaling rules between different gas compositions exist and depend on the metering technology used. However, these rules have not been tested systematically.

Solutions

The aim of this JIP is to investigate the theoretical response of different metering technologies to the introduction of non-conventional gases and validate the outcome to high-pressure, large-scale calibration with different gas compositions.

Benefits

Meter vendors receive a calibration certificate stating the measurement uncertainties of their technology under the conditions tested. The end-users will receive a report with the response of the different metering technologies to the use of non-conventional gases.

Value

This JIP will provide the knowledge base for testing gas meters under non-conventional gas compositions. Scaling rules will be devised and cost-efficient ways of testing will be core of this project. Without this knowledge, the current exposure to loss of revenue of an end-user can be up to millions USD.
