Safe assessment of embedded flaws in sour pipelines

In sour pipelines, embedded flaws are not directly exposed to the environment but are propagating in hydrogen charged steel. This may lead to enhanced fatigue crack growth rates (FCGRs).

Challenges

Build on recent research at DNV GL to develop and validate test methods for measuring FCGRs in hydrogen charged steel, representative of embedded flaws propagating in sour pipelines.

Benefits

Improved safety of subsea pipelines and risers through more accurate guidelines for engineering critical assessment (ECA) of embedded flaws in sour pipelines.

Value

It is anticipated that significant cost and schedule savings can be realized through minimizing the number of weld repairs required during pipeline installation.
