Gas is set to overtake oil as the world’s primary energy source in the mid-2020s, according to DNV GL’s 2018 Energy Transition Outlook. A considerable boost to investment will be needed to fuel the rise of gas predicted in our independent forecast of the world energy mix in the lead-up to 2050, with upstream gas capital expenditure to reach USD1.13 trillion in 2025.

The midstream sector will also need to invest considerably in connecting shifting sources of gas with changing demand centres. This will require a lot more liquefied natural gas.
