Energy Transition Outlook 2019 calls for rapid implementation of large scale CCS to deeply decarbonise hydrocarbon use. With increased focus on decarbonisation, CO2 transportation by offshore pipelines is bringing new challenges to our industry: What safety guidelines should apply and what risks to personnel and the environment will this introduce? Our models for subsea CO2 releases are largely based on experience with natural gas. However dense CO2 releases are known to behave differently, potentially leading to large gas clouds on the sea surface which may lead to threat of asphyxiation for personnel exposed.

In this webinar we will present the Sub-CO2 JIP for large-scale testing of underwater CO2 release. This JIP aims at increasing our understanding of the such releases, improve existing CO2 modelling tools to be able to establish guidelines for safety zones for offshore CO2 pipelines. The JIP will apply for public funding (CLIMIT Norway, DEC UK) in combination with funding from industry partners. We are seeking more partners to join.
