U.S. regulations mandate material property testing for natural gas pipelines without traceable, verifiable and complete records. Similar requirements are expected for hazardous liquid pipelines. Pipeline operators can use non-destructive evaluations (NDE) to establish the yield strength (grade), seam-weld toughness, and seam-weld type of unknown pipe samples, provided the evaluations:

  • Have been validated by a subject matter expert
  • Conservatively account for measurement inaccuracy and uncertainty
  • Use test equipment that has been properly calibrated for comparable test materials prior to usage.

Proposed Joint Industry Project

DNV GL proposes to serve as an independent third-party consultant working with Massachusetts Material Technologies LLC (MMT) and a project steering committee to further develop and objectively evaluate MMT’s Hardness, Strength, and Ductility Tester for evaluating vintage ERW longitudinal seams. The JIP seeks to rapidly meet project goals using a collaborative engagement with gas and liquid transmission pipeline operators, MMT, and DNV GL as a consultant to provide expertise to:

  1. Develop safe procedures for surface preparation and testing of ERW seams on active lines,
  2. Refine and Improve the Hardness, Strength, and Ductility Tester’s ability to determine seam-weld toughness and identify and differentiate low-frequency ERW pipe, and
  3. Validate the Hardness, Strength, and Ductility Tester through blind simulated field testing.
