Instructors

Alana Duerr, Director, Offshore Wind North America

Dr. Duerr is the Director for the Offshore Wind North America practice within DNV GL Energy’s Renewables Advisory. She has been in the offshore renewables space for the past 11 years, with a specific focus on offshore wind for the past 7 years. Prior to DNV GL, Dr. Duerr was the Offshore Wind Lead for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Wind Energy Technologies Office where she led the offshore wind R&D portfolio, including the Advanced Technology Demonstration Projects, the National Offshore Wind R&D Consortium with NYSERDA, and was a leader in the development and implementation of the 2016 National Offshore Wind Strategy. Dr. Duerr received her B.S. in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from Webb Institute, and her Ph.D. in Ocean Engineering from Florida Atlantic University. The combination of her education and professional experiences have allowed her to dive deep into the technology and research aspects of offshore wind, including project siting, resource assessment, plant optimization, installation, construction, logistics, and U.S. specific market drivers, regulations, and supply chain challenges. 


Sarah Aftergood, Senior Environmental and Permitting Project Manager

Sarah joined DNV GL in November 2019, and works in the Environmental and Permitting Services Team. Sarah is responsible for leading project development and permitting activities including the preparation of local, state, and national renewable energy permit applications, associated environmental and social impact studies, stakeholder engagement sessions, and land use and zoning permit applications for onshore wind, solar/battery storage and offshore wind power projects. Sarah previously worked as an renewable energy project developer are EDPR, and got her first offshore wind experience in the UK working as a Fisheries Consultant and Environmental Enforcement Officer. 

Mohsen Zadeh, Senior Electrical Engineer


Mohsen Zadeh is currently working as a senior electrical engineer in the Renewable Advisory group of DNV GL based in Toronto, ON. Mr. Zadeh has extensive professional experience including power electrical system studies and HV/MV cables and substation design of utility-scale renewable energy projects including onshore and offshore wind projects across North America. He has recently been extensively involved on a number of offshore wind electrical transmission preliminary design projects in North America ranging from shallow waters of the east coast to floating and deep waters of the west coast.  Mr. Zadeh holds a Master of Engineering Science in power systems from University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, Canada, is a member of AWEA, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and International Council on Large Electric Systems (CIGRE), as well as a Registered Professional Engineer in the provinces of Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta Canada, as well as US state of Nevada. 

Chris Elkinton, Senior Project Manager and Offshore Technical Lead

Dr. Chris Elkinton is a Project Manager and the Offshore Technical Lead on the Wind Independent Engineering team at DNV GL. Dr. Elkinton has more than 15 years of experience in offshore wind consulting on project feasibility and concept design, port readiness, due diligence, and market entry. Dr. Elkinton specializes in technical due diligence for onshore and offshore wind projects and has managed technical due diligence assignments in support of project financing for more than 4 GW of wind projects during the past five years. Last year alone, Dr. Elkinton and his colleagues provided technical due diligence to 85% of the onshore wind financing transactions in the US and 3.4 GW in offshore wind transactions globally. Dr. Elkinton joined DNV GL in 2007 and holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Katherine Diaz, Offshore Wind Analyst

Katherine joined DNV GL in June 2020, and works in DNV GL’s Offshore Wind group. Prior to DNV GL, Katherine worked for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection as an assistant geophysicist working with BOEM and USACE on offshore sand resource exploration projects. Katherine obtained her M.S. in Geological Science from University of Delaware with a focus on geophysics, offshore wind, subsurface geology, and foundation structures and her B.S. in Geology with a minor in Coastal and Marine Geoscience from University of Delaware. Katherine is responsible for assisting on offshore wind project development activities and providing insight on geological, geotechnical, and geophysical parameters surrounding offshore wind projects.
