Transmission lines are designed to transmit and supply continuous and reliable power. With a growing world population and an increasing share of renewables in our power system, our power grids capacity and resilience are a growing challenge for Transmission System Operators all over the world. Increased power production by renewables can lead to congestions in the grid, resulting in curtailment of green power. Higher demands for power and the need for security of supply may interfere with required maintenance schedules. Ambitious time-to-energize planning for a new or extended transmission track might lead to huge additional costs. On top of this our power systems are also subject to natural disasters and planned human attacks.

DNV’s Emergency Restoration System is a low-cost investment and the ideal solution to mitigate operational and financial risks.

Emergency Restoration

Application

Example

Application
Transmission towers and lines are subject to planned attacks and ever-increasing natural disasters due to climate change. A severe storm could damage a section of a line causing an interruption in power flow which could lead to power outages. Everything you need to restore power as soon as possible is stored in 20ft containers which can be transported quickly to remote sites. The innovative hoisting tower design can assist in fully erecting a tower within four hours without the need of any additional cranes or other heavy vehicles.

System Maintenance

Application

Example

Application
ERS applications: system maintenance 375x161pxl
Example
Aging transmission networks and unexpected weather patterns put additional strain on transmission towers and materials, regular maintenance is necessary. Our system can be implemented as a temporary bypass reducing the outage times required during maintenance.
System Bypass

Application

Example

Application
Due to increased power flow demands and space and environmental constraints, more and more existing transmission lines are upgraded. A parallel ERS line can be constructed to keep the lights on.

Grid Capacity

Application

Example

Application
ERS applications: grid capacity 375x161pxl
Example
The location of power generation is changing as the world is moving to renewable energy sources. These sources must be connected to the existing grid, which could be challenging due to regulatory processes and sensitivity studies. Our ERS can be implemented as a medium- and long-term solution to relieve system constraints for multiple years at a time.
