Reliable electricity supply is under threat because of resource constraint, with the depletion of fossil fuel reserves and the transient nature of renewable energy sources. Large-scale storage systems could be designed and weaved into the electrical infrastructure to increase power supply robustness. Prudent energy storage deployment could mitigate outages, shave network peaks, reduce congestion, provide network support in remote areas or even hold off the need to spend on network expansion. Distributed storage systems allows for clean and better power match to usage needs in the context of variable renewable power generation through photovoltaics (PV) and wind.
Future electrical energy needs requires serious investment in grid transformation. The increased share and penetration of variable renewables is the primary driver of the need for change but with so many stakeholders, often with conflicting needs, the challenge is complex.
