Aquaculture going offshore

Safe and sustainable food production in new environments

Request a copy

In this position paper, DNV GL explores the possibilities and challenges in moving towards offshore aquaculture. Pressure on wild catch, and the world’s growing demand for protein means that new waters beyond the confines of onshore or relatively benign near-shore fish farming facilities must be found. However, the challenges in moving offshore must not be underestimated. In this paper DNV GL discusses key success factors associated with:

  • fish health and fish welfare
  • safety regimes
  • novel concepts and technologies
  • sustainability
  • regulations, and
  • governance.

This position paper is the first deliverable from DNV GL ‘Ocean Space’ research programme. We are closely connected with research and academia in this area, and are investing in building new knowledge and qualifying new technologies for a safe and sustainable food production in the aquaculture industry.
