Corrosion (internal and external) and third-party damage (dent and gouge) are the main causes of pipeline failures worldwide. When such damage in pipelines is detected by direct inspection, or in-line inspection (ILI) methods, a decision to replace, repair or accept and monitor must be made. Extensive experimental, analytical and numerical work has been undertaken over the past few decades to enable an assessment to be undertaken of the severity of the damage and to quantify its impact on the pipeline design and remaining life.
