The continuing socio-economical growth all over the African continent had created a gap between the electricity demand and supply capacities. In response, authorities are paving the way for merchant power plants to be integrated into the generation mix, notably renewables and also gas. Formerly, the management of power generation capacity was the sole responsibility of the vertically-integrated utility.

To merchant power plant owners, Return on investment (ROI) after transfer of ownership is the key indicator on their power generation projects. During the project delivery phase and warranty period, it is prudent to systematically review the technical interfacing of components and sub-systems transversally across contractual interfaces. This will provide visibility on risks within the generator and transmission project scopes respectively, for pro-active mitigation actions.

Adding to the increasingly complicated project scenario as outlined above, the geographical distance between the component factories and the construction sites all together complete the risk profile of projects in Africa...
