This paper focuses on the fundamentals of IoT for everyone in the built environment. Rather than confusing readers through technical reviews of application protocols and network layers, this paper seeks to highlight the value and benefit that these solutions can create and the challenges to large-scale adoption these solutions face. The paper looks to real-world early adopters of IoT solutions to show how access to data leads to better business decisions. In addition, it highlights the future potential these devices hold. With billions of Internet-enabled devices coming online over the next few years, now is the time to begin exploring IoT’s impact on the built environment.
