Realising an affordable, reliable and sustainable supply of energy is paramount to preserve our world and improve quality of life on our planet. Offshore wind is powerful, clean and predictable, making it an ideal source of energy. It is, however, still too expensive to compete with existing energy sources. DNV GL has pledged to contribute to realising the cost reductions necessary to make offshore wind competitive.

Significant further cost reductions can be achieved by viewing the wind farm as an integrated system. Power frequency is a key electrical system parameter that determines the cost of and losses in the wind farm’s electrical infrastructure. DNV GL research shows that by combining detailed technical and cost knowledge of all wind farm components, an optimal power frequency can be found which minimises the cost of offshore wind energy.
