In preparation for a blackout, Transmission System Operators (TSOs) must ensure that firm network restoration strategies are in place. Today, it is common practice to make use of strategically located conventional power plants, equipped with black start functionality, for such purpose. However, the societal ambition towards a sustainable carbon-free electrical power system is redefining how the grid is operated. As traditional generation is phased-out, the role of renewable energy sources in power system operations will expand. Therefore, it’s worth considering renewable energy’s role during network restoration procedures. This paper gives an overview of the potential use of wind power as a black start source for network restoration.
