Carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS)

DNV GL services span the entire global value chain of CO2: capture, conditioning, compression, transport, storage and EOR.

Enabling enhanced performance with carbon management technologies

CCUS is key technology in the global energy transition, enabling the upholding of energy supply and the production of essential materials, while limiting climate change.

DNV GL provides world-class CCUS expertise for technical assurance, testing, advisory and risk management. Our specialist CCUS team is supported by more than 200 engineers in CO2-related disciplines worldwide. We provide expertise in process engineering, flue gas treatment, material technology, testing, corrosion, pipeline integrity, geology, geophysics, oil and gas reservoirs, EOR, well integrity risk and reliability, environmental impact, techno-economics, stakeholder management and CCUS strategy.

At our Spadeadam and Groningen test sites you can carry out full-scale and lab scale testing of any integrity, corrosion and safety issue specifically for CO2 applications.

The widely-adopted DNV GL industry guidelines and Recommended Practices for CCUS are developed through joint industry projects and are freely available. Currently we run several innovation programs, like HiPerCap, Pipetrans, Subsea CO2, ECO2 and IMPACTS and we are involved in developing the new ISO standard for CCS. We also work with partners in World Business Council for Sustainable Development to speed up carbon capture and storage as a critical part of the solution to climate change.

For 25 years we have served the global CCUS industry leaders like Shell, BP, BG, Statoil, Maersk Oil, Aker Solutions, The Crown Estate, National Grid, Gasunie, Alberta Energy, Gassco, Gassnova and the European Investment Bank.

What we offer:

Our services span the entire global value chain of CO2: capture, conditioning, compression, transport, storage and EOR. We build trust for industries, investors and governing bodies, from strategic planning through technology demonstration to operational excellence.

  • CCUS technology qualification
  • CCUS techno-economical due diligence and benchmarking
  • CCUS feasibility and risk assessments

DNV GL Recommended practices (RPs) and service specifications (SE) for the whole CCUS value chain

A barrier to effective large-scale deployment of CCUS is the current lack of recognised standards and guidelines that can support the implementation of CCUS in compliance with emerging regulatory frameworks. We have therefore taken a commitment to address this gap and contribute to develop adequate guidelines for critical parts of the CCUS value chain.

CO2RISKMAN

Initiated and led by DNV GL to develop industry guidance that provides a comprehensive reference source to assist the emerging CCS industry appreciate, understand, communicate and manage the issues, challenges and potential hazards associated with handling CCS CO2 streams.

CO2PIPETRANS

CO2PIPETRANS phase 2 is an enabling project to support implementation and promote public and regulatory acceptance of carbon, capture and storage.

Test sites and laboratories

DNV GL owns several facilities where CCUS-related large- and small-scale tests can be performed.

Spadeadam Testing and Research, UK

Spadeadam offers the opportunity to carry out rarely available trials in a controlled and secure ‘real-life’ environment.

Groeningen Multiphase Flow Laboratory, The Netherlands

Allows equipment manufacturers and oil and gas companies to test, validate and calibrate multiphase technologies.
