Cranes and lifting appliances are inherently high-risk equipment, whether operated offshore or onshore. Hence, most countries need strict requirements for design verification, fabrication survey, and witnessing of testing for such equipment. 

Since the 1980s, DNV GL has assisted operators, rig owners, crane manufacturers and other industry stakeholders in managing risk within a wide range of crane/lifting projects, mainly in the oil and gas industry but also in wind turbine industry, harbours and land-based industry. Our extensive, technical and operational knowledge, and in-depth understanding of standards, allow us to provide cost-effective, multidisciplinary services across geographies.

DNV GL plays an active role in the development and maintenance of national and international standards such as the establishment of EN 13852-1, the upcoming EN 13852-3 and NORSOK R-002. Additionally, we develop DNV GL recommended practices, many of them in close cooperation with the industry according to market demands.
