The oil and gas industry faces challenges around the potential impact of acute and regular discharges to the marine environment. Evaluating these impacts is complex and requires specialist expertise, advanced models, and high quality input data.
DNV GL applies state-of-the-art numerical models to calculate the dispersion of acute and regular discharges to the marine environment. These calculations form the basis for environmental risk, oil spill contingency, and (real-time) impact modelling.
Using our extensive experience, we can help you select spill scenarios appropriately. We carry out stochastic and single scenario modelling, for offshore, coastal and ice-covered waters using OSCAR (Oil Spill Contingency and Response) – a 3D modelling system that calculates and records the distribution of oil on the water surface, on shorelines, in the water column, and in sediments. This system can also model response options to support cost-effective contingency planning.
We perform dispersion modelling of operational discharges, such as produced water (including chemicals) and drill cuttings, using DREAM (Dose-related Risk and Effects Assessment Model); the results are visualised and communicated using geographic information systems (GIS). We have also recently invested in capabilities for real-time monitoring and simulation of cuttings releases in sensitive areas.
DNV GL also provides statistical response gap modelling: investigating when, where and how oil spill response operations are limited or ineffective in the face of rough weather, sea and ice.
