ETA and port call predictions

DTC - ETA and port call predictions

Data-derived prediction of vessels' future port calls and indication of expected arrival time

ETA and port call predictions

DNV GL offers a data product that predicts calls and Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) up to three ports ahead. Using AIS-data (automatic identification system) combined with historic voyage data, our service is based on the assumption that past traffic patterns of a vessel can be used to predict its future behaviour. The data product provides insights into maritime traffic patterns and allows for improved utilization of resources and better planning of port services.

How does ETA prediction work?

AIS data provides next port ETA information that is based on information provided by the vessel's crew. However, when purely based on AIS data, the accurancy and time span of ETA and port call prediction is highly dependent on the thoroughness of the crew's reporting, which varies at best.

DNV GL's unique data-driven approach combining actual AIS data with data from historic shipping patterns significantly improves accuracy and reliability of the prediction of a vessel's next port calls and ETA. It allows for an extension of the time span of the prediction window to up to three ports ahead and up to 14 days in advance.

Benefits of ETA and port call predictions

Port calls and ETA predictions can assist companies in improving their logistics related to delivering goods and service to vessels. It can help freight trades in establishing insight into future fleet positions up to two weeks in advance, so they can take advantage of the information for trading purposes. The service is also interesting for companies with port-based activities towards vessels - such as classification, paint, spare parts, etc. It can also be used by port and berth operations and traffic management.

Key advantages:

  • Cost reductions for shipping companies and port authorities due to better utilized resources and reduced waiting time
  • Better planning and utilization of resources related to the arrival of vessels in ports and terminal quays or presence at a certain location
  • More efficient cooperation among partners in a logistic chain
  • Improved connection of various loading and unloading processes

DNV GL's data product on ETA and port call predictions

We can provide our customers with ETA and port call predictions either by data via an API or as an easily downloadable dataset that can be fed into automated planning systems. The ETA and port call predictions can also be geographically visualized per region or port, showing where vessels most likely will be at a specified time.
