3D Printing for the Maritime Industry – Awareness and Knowledge Training

Training course to provide insights and raise awareness about the business potential of 3D printing in the maritime sector.

Objectives

To provide commercial and technical insights and raise awareness about business potentials for 3D Printing or Additive Manufacturing (AM) in the maritime industry. The target audience are executives, managers and engineers working in port operations, ship owning/management and maritime service providers. Attendees will be empowered with the knowledge of opportunities, challenges and regulations for 3D Printing innovations, and hence, able to make more educated decisions regarding the application or adoption of 3D printing in their own business strategy.

Knowledge about the usual management, operations or maintenance in the shipping industry.

About 3D Printing

It is widely recognised that 3D Printing (or AM) will be an essential pillar of the fourth industrial revolution, accompanied by the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), etc. An estimation of AM impact to ASEAN is that US$ 100 billion of incremental value will be generated by 2025, impacting the projected real GDP by 1.5 to 2%. AM represents huge potentials for the maritime industry, based on the tremendous benefits in the near future and low penetration until now.

In February 2018,  DNV GL set up the Global Additive Manufacturing Centre of Excellence in Singapore. The Centre is led by a Global AM Lead who has a PhD in AM and extensive certification expertise, and it comprises a team with more than 8,000 hours of AM direct customer engagement & project execution. 

DNV GL has officially released three AM standards and guidelines on qualification and certification of AM parts and amended Ship Rules to allow AM parts. We are working with more than 50 partners in Singapore and hundreds of AM eco-system players worldwide. 

Course content

This course will provide the participants with the necessary background to understand the benefits and suitability of AM in the maritime industry. It will include an overview of available processes, opportunities and challenges for adoption of AM, present practical examples from joint industry projects, standards and qualification of AM parts, as well as discuss current development trends. All the topics will be presented as lectures and with case studies. Practical illustrations and suggestions will be provided for the participants to grasp the real opportunities of AM. All attendees will receive a DNV GL AM Awareness Training Certificate. Prior knowledge of manufacturing or supply chain is helpful, but not compulsory.
