In recent times the need to protect ourselves from the hazards of explosion or ballistic attack, be they the result of accident or terrorist activity, has grown. This five-day course provides an introduction to the techniques required to design buildings to protect their occupants from the effects of explosions or ballistic attack.

Course schedule overview for 5 days

The course is intended for students with existing experience of structural analysis and preferably with some experience of simple dynamic design. It is designed to allow the participants to progress from the classroom to actual projects. The subject matter is relevant to both students involved in providing protection from terrorist attack and those involved in the design of explosive storage and processing facilities.

The course will also include discussion of the relevance of design techniques and protection from blast generated by oil and gas explosions.

Content will include:

  • Blast and ballistic design for concrete, steel, aluminium and glass
  • Use of dynamic design tools from simple design guides to complex finite element modelling
  • Blast and ballistic testing.

The format will combine classroom sessions with workshops and practical demonstrations of a range of explosive effects. By running the course on an explosive range it is possible to allow students to gain first-hand experience of the effects of a range of explosives devices. The training will be held at the DNV GL Spadeadam Testing and Research and will be presented by DNV GL, D.J. Goode & Associates and a guest speaker.
