Objectives

The aim of this course is to refresh the knowledge of participants who have already qualified as CSO or SSO and undertake security specific duties as described in the ISPS Code. Attention will be paid to recent updates from SOLAS and STCW security requirements, including recommendations for the operation of ships in high-risk areas.

Basic knowledge of maritime security

Who should attend:
Shipping Companies, shore: Fleet managers, CSOs, DPAs, superintendents; Ship: Masters, SSOs, nautical officers, engineers; Other: PFSOs, staff of marine administrations and agencies, security consultants

Duration: 1 day


The course provides up-to-date knowledge of legal developments, interpretations and recommendations since the arrival of the ISPS Code and as such fulfils the requirements for CSO/SSO refresher training. Based on experience gained and best management practice, it serves as practical guidance to reinforce and improve implementation and maintenance of the required security measures throughout companies and onboard ships. The 2010 amendments to the STCW Convention related to security have been taken into account and will be treated in depth.

Company Security Officers (CSOs) will be enabled to promote and improve maritime security throughout their fleet and Ship Security Officers (SSOs) will update their level of knowledge and be able to perform their tasks more effectively during the day to day routine and in response to security incidents.

The content and guidance provided addresses mainly acting Company Security Officers (CSO) and Ship Security Officers (SSO) but will also be of benefit to those exercising security responsibilities in shipping companies, Administrations, agencies, port facilities and in the supply chain. Methods for the implementation of effective security measures with focus on operating in high-risk areas are exemplified on the basis of lessons learnt and by means of case studies.
