Course description

Since the Netherlands adopted natural gas in the 1960s, DNV GL has been involved in the design and operation of natural gas metering stations. This five (5) days training course is consisted of a one (1) day introductory course and a four (4) days advanced course. The courses can be taken consecutively, as the introductory course is always planned the day before the advanced course begins.

Introductory

This introductory course provides a good general overview of gas flow metering and gas quality metering principles, not at a detailed level, but more in related context. It is designed for participants that are relatively new to the field of fiscal metering of natural gas. For those who already possess a basic knowledge of gas, gas flow metering and gas quality metering principles, they can directly join the advanced course.

Advanced

This four-day advanced course provides in-depth insight into all aspects of fiscal metering. It helps you to design and operate accurate and reliable metering stations with low levels of measurement uncertainty. You will find out how to minimise systematic errors, learn to judge whether the company that measures your natural gas usage is generating accurate data and push your gas balance to equilibrium.  Learn to discriminate between negligible ‘noise’ in your instruments and systematic errors that require adjustment. We will be illustrating how large errors may occur, and how to avoid them. You will learn how to optimise and speed up costly and time-consuming calibration and adjustment by using mobile reference tools and automation.


The advanced course also includes introduction to wet gas metering and sales gas allocation, for those relatively new to the fields or want to better understand the principles that govern wet gas flows. At DNV GL’s multiphase flow facility, flow meters are tested and fundamental research is performed to better understand the physics behind wet gas flow metering. One of the scientists working in this facility is Dennis van Putten, who will be conducting the topic in this course.

Result

After attending, you will have gained both practical and theoretical knowledge. You will understand the principles of designing and operating fiscal metering systems for natural gas and you will be fully aware that designing an accurate measurement system not only requires sound knowledge of metering techniques, but also practical experience of do's and don'ts.  You will also gain good overview knowledge of wet gas metering and sales gas allocation.
