DNV GL, the world’s largest resource of independent energy experts and certification body, is offering PhD students from across the globe the chance to enter the 3rd annual ‘DNV GL PhD Award in Renewable Energy and Grid Integration’ competition. Theses covering the themes of renewables, grid integration, innovation and reducing the cost of energy can enter the competition with the author of the winning thesis receiving a 5000€ prize cash prize.
The competition and prize was first initiated in 2012 to support research & development, education, the creation of new knowledge and to encourage the development of advanced technology and processes for renewable energy. In order to combat the threat of the growing engineering skills shortage, DNV GL understands the value of supporting the next generation of renewable energy leaders and the new innovative ideas that they bring to the table. Judging criteria will focus on innovation providing new creative insights and ideas to move the renewable energy industry forward. Special focus will be on how the work promotes innovation in wind and solar PV, grid integration of renewables and how the work reduces the cost of energy for renewables.

Students are required to submit all theses published between 1 December 2014 and 30 November 2015. Applications will close on 30 November 2015 and the winner will be announced on 31 January 2016.
Previous DNV GL PhD Award winner, Nikola Vasiljević, Ph.D from DTU Wind Energy, the Technical University of Denmark, entered his thesis, “A time-space synchronisation of coherent Doppler scanning lidars for 3D measurements of wind fields”, which stood out to judges with its potential for wind farm operation and its ability to help move the renewable energy industry forward.
Commenting on his award win Nikola Vasiljević said: “I was encouraged to enter the competition by my Head of Section as he felt strongly that industry experts would see the value in the clear and practical solutions my thesis presented. The DNV GL PhD Award is an exceptional award which has only served to further highlight the importance of the four years I spent dedicated to the development of the new instrumentation for wind energy. It also encourages me to use my skills and knowledge to achieve great results and to simplify usage of new instrumentations as well as extending applicability across wind energy.”
