DNV GL, TU Delft and Berenschot develop energy storage roadmap for Topsector Energy in the Netherlands

A partnership of DNV GL, TU Delft and Berenschot has been commissioned by the Dutch Topsector Energy to develop a roadmap for energy storage in the Netherlands. Among other things, this roadmap will show where government, industry and researchers should focus on over the next 15 years when it comes to research and development in the field of energy storage.

  • Energy storage systems are important to support the growth of renewable energy in the Netherlands
  • Partnership develops roadmap for energy storage in 2030
  • Consultation with industry and users to identify trends, opportunities and obstacles

With an increasing role of renewable energy sources like solar and wind power, local and central large-scale storage systems can be important for balancing energy demand and generation. This will have consequences for the organisation of the future electricity infrastructure in the Netherlands. The role of central, large-scale energy storage as well as the role of decentralized small-scale storage is part of the project. The research will focus on which energy storage technologies will be important in the short, middle and long term; how the sector currently looks like and how it should develop; and the economic opportunities for Dutch parties, so that the energy sector can remain competitive in the global market.

On 1 March 2015, the roadmap will be presented to the Dutch Topsector Energy. The roadmap will be based upon the specific energy expertise of the partners, desk research (for example internationally used technologies), best practices and the international positioning of the Netherlands in the field of energy storage. Also, industry and users (e.g. DSOs, TSOs and Utilities) will be consulted on trends, opportunities and barriers, for example on 9 December at the Cleantech Business Day and on 20 January at WattConnects.
